Free breast cancer screening for Quebec women aged 70 to 74
Quebec provides free access to breast cancer screening for women aged 70 to 74.
So far, this program has been offered exclusively to women aged 50 to 69.
These screenings are done every two years in designated screening centers.
As of February 1, eligible women have received personalized invitations in the mail allowing them to book mammography appointments at recognized radiology clinics.
They do not need to get a prescription from a healthcare professional.
The Quebec government has also tasked the National Institute of Social Excellence and Social Services (INESSS) to evaluate the possibility of lowering the screening age to 40.
The Quebec Ministry of Health notes that the Canadian Cancer Society has found that breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in Canada and the second leading cause of cancer-related death among Canadian women.
In Quebec, about 8,000 new cases of breast cancer appear each year, and about 80 percent of these cases affect women age 50 and older.
