Niagara police officer shot in Welland; 'Stay at home' order remains in effect
A Niagara Falls police officer was shot and taken to hospital Friday morning while responding to a call in Welland, Ont. Police say the officer is not in critical condition, but a stay-at-home order remains in effect for the surrounding area.
The incident occurred in the area of Plymouth Road and Lincoln Street.
Police say the suspect in the shooting is a man who is currently inside a building in the area and officers are working to secure the area.
Police are asking residents to avoid the area bounded by Lincoln Street to the north, Thread Street to the south, King Street to the west and Coventry Road to the east.
Several Welland schools and hospitals are also temporarily on lockdown, police said.
“There is a large police presence in the area and members of the community are asked to remain in their homes until further notice so officers can secure the area,” the police statement said.
Police also said a large security perimeter will be set up around the scene and an investigation is underway.
Meanwhile, the Niagara Region Board of Education said Plymouth Public School has been placed on lockdown. Niagara Transit has also been instructed to divert students who were on their way to school to Diamond Trail Public School.
The statement asked parents to keep their children home until further notice if they are walking or driving to school. It said additional information will be provided to families as soon as possible.
