Formal talks to begin today at EU-Canada Summit in Newfoundland

ST. Johns, N.L. - Official talks are expected to begin today between Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and two senior EU leaders.

European Council President Charles Michel and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen for the 19th EU-Canada Summit in St. John's, N.L.

Climate change, hydrogen energy and the ongoing wars in Gaza and Ukraine are expected to be high on the leaders' agenda.
   Jeremy Kinsman, Canada's former ambassador to the European Union in Brussels, says both sides probably think their strategic partnership will become even more vital if Donald Trump manages to win the US presidency again.

Achim Horelmann, a professor at Carleton University who directs the school's Center for European Studies, agrees, noting that the EU and Canada have grown closer during Trump's presidency, which ends in 2020.

Horleman says the summit is pretty much casual, though he says he expects some discussion of green energy, especially with meetings in Newfoundland, where several green hydrogen projects have been proposed with Germany as a target market.

"What I've sometimes heard said about EU-Canada relations is that there is no problem," Horlemann said in an interview.
