Google Maps changed the name of Toronto's Dundes Square to Sankofa Square

If you have searched Toronto's Young Dunes Square on Google Maps, you will now notice that the tech giant has changed the name of this square to Sankofa; A change that some are not happy with.

One resident, who just noticed the change, took to Reddit on Monday to say that the square's name change now looks a lot more official now that Google has confirmed the new name.

Hundreds of people commented on the issue, with many opposing the somewhat controversial new name, which was announced by the municipality in December.

Some questioned the Sankofa name and the millions of dollars that the municipality is investing in its creation and wondered what it meant to the people of Toronto, pointing out that the new name, taken from the country of Ghana, means "learning from the past." is as problematic as its previous name.

Another person wrote: "This new name surprises me! "The municipality went and used the language of a tribe that was directly involved in the slave trade."

"This is just a waste of taxpayers' money," said another. Sankofa?? what does it have to do with??? This capital can be used for food banks or laptops for children or millions of other things."

By the second quarter of this year, the municipality plans to officially remove the Dundes name from the square and rename the Dundes and Dundes West subway stations, as well as the Jane/Dundes Public Library.
