Driver killed in CTrain crash on Memorial Drive
Calgary police say one person was killed Wednesday in a crash between a car and a ctrain.
The collision happened on Memorial Drive N.E. On the flyover above the track just before 8:30am.
The car, a silver 2000 Chrysler Intrepid, collided with an eastbound CTrain and was dragged along the tracks, police said.
The impact caused the Chrysler to hit the beam and split it in half. Parts of the car, including its gas tank and battery, could be seen at the bottom of the embankment toward Deerfoot Trail.
EMS says one person was extricated from the vehicle by firefighters and taken to Foothills Medical Center in critical condition.
Police confirm that he is a 48-year-old man.
"As a result of that collision, he suffered fatal injuries," Sergeant Colin Foster said.
The collision occurred in the same area where a vehicle collided with the CTrain in December 2023, killing one person.
The crash has closed one lane south of Deerfoot at Memorial Drive N.E. and two lanes of Memorial Drive near St. George's Drive N.E.
"This is the third fatal accident that I can think of in the last 12 years at that particular location," said Sgt. Colin Foster.
