Canada saw an increase in the number of children due to the flu in 2022-2023.
The number of hospitalizations for respiratory illnesses in Canada for youth under 18 and flu-related hospitalizations for children under four will increase significantly between 2022 and 2023, a new report shows.
A Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI) report released today shows that in 2022-23, 2,444 children under four were hospitalized, returning to pre-pandemic levels.
Also, in that age group, "hospitalization rates for lower respiratory tract infections doubled, and the number of hospitalizations for coronavirus increased by 43%." Hospitalizations for pneumonia tripled for Canadians (17 and younger) and almost doubled for asthma.
CIHI Director of Acute and Ambulatory Care Information Services says their goal is to provide up-to-date information for health system planners and decision makers.
