Wild cat escapes from Ontario shelter and police warn pet owners
The Ontario Provincial Police has issued a warning that a medium-sized wildcat has escaped from an animal shelter in Bonnechere Valley, Ontario, approximately 130 kilometers west of Ottawa. According to the police, this African serval cat can pose a threat to livestock and household pets.
Officials and members of the provincial animal welfare department responded to a report of the cat's escape at around 8:45 AM on Thursday. The cat is identified by its sharp-tipped ears and a body adorned with spots, weighing approximately 25 to 30 pounds. The police have advised people in the area to take necessary precautions and report any sightings of this animal. Bonnechere Valley is located in Renfrew County and, according to the 2021 federal census, has a population of fewer than 3,900 people.
