Toronto police officer sentenced to seven years in prison for fraud

In court Tuesday, Superior Court Judge Sean Dunphy sentenced police officer Robert Konashevich and former civil servant Adeline Balgobin to seven years each. The two men have been accused of a complex and planned fraud for a long time. Balgobin was involved in the management of the personal affairs of a person named Heinz Sommerfeld, and after Sommerfeld's death, they stole his property worth 834 thousand dollars by forging his financial will.

In other details, Balgobin was named as Sommerfeld's beneficiary in a will from 2006. The police investigation was initiated by Konashewych's daughter, Candace Dixon, who delivered a letter titled "Estate of Heinz Sommerfeld c/o Robert Konashewych" to the Toronto Police Service. This letter started the police investigation and the arrest of these two people.

It has also been noted that Konashevitch has been on paid suspension since his arrest in 2020 and will likely lose his police job now that he has been sentenced to prison. His defense lawyer asked the judge to sentence him to one year in prison, but the court has decided that both of them will be sentenced to seven years in prison.
