The Toronto Police Board has approved a $20 million budget increase for 2024
The Toronto Police Service (TPS) is asking the city for a net operating budget of nearly $1.2 billion for 2024, which it says will allow hundreds of officers to wear new uniforms.
Toronto Police Chief Myron Demkio presented his budget proposal at Tuesday's TPS board meeting, calling for $1.186 billion, which is $20 million more than the approved 2023 budget.
It was approved by the board and sent to the county budget committee for consideration.
"This is a budget built on fiscal responsibility and resources, with the goal of providing adequate resources needed to maintain low levels of service and strive to provide adequate and policing services in the city of Toronto," Demkiw said in his report.
He noted that the 2024 budget will be used to increase frontline resources to focus on emergency response time, increase investigative investigations to close cases, and improve oversight and accountability through oversight.
"This funding will allow the Service to continue critical proactive policing programs and collaborate with other agencies to support safer communities," Demkio wrote.
