The first weekly insulin injection is coming to Canada in 2 weeks
Pharmaceutical company Novo Nordisk announced that its new insulin drug Awiqli, the world's first weekly insulin injection, will be available across Canada starting June 30.
This is important news for the millions of Canadians with diabetes who have had to inject insulin daily. Awiqli helps type 1 and type 2 diabetics control their blood sugar levels more effectively.
Canada is the first country to launch Awiqli. The drug was approved by Health Canada in March to treat adults with type 1 and type 2 diabetes.
Although Awiqli is approved for both types of diabetes, endocrinologists believe that the drug will be more beneficial for patients with type 2 diabetes. Because type 1 diabetes patients still need more daily insulin injections due to the lack of insulin production in the body. While people with type 2 diabetes produce insulin, it is either not enough or their body does not use it properly.
