The City of Toronto has officially approved the consumption of alcohol in public parks
The City of Toronto has officially approved the consumption of alcoholic beverages in public parks. This approval comes after municipal staff called it a successful pilot project. Twenty members of the city council supported the plan with 4 votes against. Twenty-seven parks were part of the pilot program, including Trinity Bluewoods, Christy Pitts, and Riverdale Park.
The municipality now plans to add at least one park in each ward for alcohol consumption among the remaining 144 parks. According to the city, during the two-month trial period that ended on March 31, they received only two complaints related to alcohol in the parks.
In a public opinion poll, 46% of people were in favor of drinking alcohol in parks, 23% were neutral and 30% were against. According to the survey, those most supportive of alcohol in parks came from Toronto and East York, where most of the pilot parks were located.
According to this program, alcoholic beverages must be consumed in the park only between 5:30 a.m. and midnight, and the alcohol content of the beverages must not exceed 15 percent.
People who drink these drinks should stay two meters away from playgrounds, swimming pools, splash pads and skateboard parks.
