Local Regina basketball rivalry turns into partnership: ‘It felt really special’
It's not every day we see a friendly rivalry, but it happened to the girls basketball teams at Sheldon Williams and Thom high schools in Regina.
The rivalry between anything south and north of Dewdney Avenue in Regina goes back a long way. But in the case of the Tom and Sheldon Williams high school girls basketball teams, the rivalry was abandoned. The reason was that Tom High School did not have enough players to form a team.
But thanks to the combined efforts of Tom's athletic director, Scott Bridgman, and Sheldon assistant girls basketball coach, McKenzie Williams, the two teams merged into one.
This unique union not only allowed the Tom High School girls to continue the season, but also provided an opportunity to form new bonds and eliminate unhealthy competition.
"It was an incredible experience," one of Tom's high school players said in an interview. We trained together, played together and learned to be a team. "I feel like I made new friends and learned a lot."
Sheldon's assistant coach, McKenzie Williams, was also positive about the experience, saying, “It was a great opportunity to show the power of sports to bring people together. "It was really special to see these girls work together and respect each other."
This inspiring story shows how competition can turn into cooperation and lead to positive outcomes for all involved.
