Relatives of family killed in London, Ont., truck attack worry about more hate, call for humanity
Hina and Ali do not name the racist white man who attacked their family with his big truck.
They say: "The killer tried to separate us, separate people from others. That was his goal, but what I saw was people from different lives embracing and supporting us. Mee Hina said her niece, Madiha Salman, 44, was one of four people killed in an attack on a Muslim family on June 6, 2021, in London, Ontario.
Also, on the same day, Madiha's husband, 47-year-old Salman Afghaal, their daughter, 15-year-old Yomeneh, and Salman's mother, Talat Afghaal, 74, were also killed. Their nine-year-old son saw seriously and survived.
Nathaniel Weltman, 22, was convicted last week of four counts of first-degree murder and one count of attempted murder. In an interview with Adrienne Arsenault, they spoke about the two-month trial period and the path they took after the attack in 2021, when members of the community and politicians rallied to not welcome individuals and Islamophobia.
They hope that the people they see around them are not the future. Surviving family members had always wanted Afgal's surviving son to stay out of the public eye, but say prayers and expressions of support from across the country have made it possible for him to recover.
