Ottawa space lab closes after more than five decades in business
After 52 years, a space technology laboratory in Ottawa will close at the end of March 2025, the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) announced Friday.
"The difficult decision to cease operations of DFL is based on a strategic review of operations," CSA said in a statement.
According to the CSA report, this world-class facility is one of the few in the world capable of simulating the extreme stress and temperature associated with rocket launches and spaceflight.
Work on the Canadarm was done there, which is considered one of the country's most famous technological achievements in the field of robotics. It supported US space shuttle missions for 30 years.
"It was the way we were in business in the world of space exploration, and I'm sure it was an inspiration to many young Canadians growing up," said Chamberlain.
There are currently 34 employees working at the facility, which is expected to reduce operations over the next few months.
