New Far North hospital moves closer to being built after $1.8B design, build contract awarded
The Weeneebayko Area Health Authority and the Ontario government have awarded a $1.8 billion contract to design, build and finance a new Far North Hospital.
This project is carried out with a public-private partnership (P3) and a design, build and finance (DBF) approach. This approach enables collaboration in defining project requirements, design, pricing and risk management.
The winner of this contract is a consortium led by construction company Pomerleau Health Partners. Kasian Architects Ontario Inc. and Bertrand Wheeler Architecture Inc. They are responsible for the design of this center. Pomerleau Inc. It is responsible for its construction and PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP is financing the project.

Michael Lindsay, CEO of Infrastructure Ontario, called the project "unique" and said it will revolutionize health services in the North.
About the current hospital:
The new hospital will replace the Winnipeg General Hospital on Moose Factory Island, which was originally built in 1950 to quarantine tuberculosis patients.
Local health officials have said that this center is in a bad condition and they consider it one of the worst hospitals in the country.
The future of the project:
The construction of this state-of-the-art health center will replace the current dilapidated hospital and will create a transformation in the health services of the Far North.
