He made the announcement at a public event in Edmonton, Alberta, on Thursday.
This news is short and urgent. The continuation of the previous report is presented below.
After months of speculation about his political intentions, Mark Carney will launch his campaign for the Liberal Party leadership this afternoon in Edmonton.
Mark Carney, who has run the Bank of Canada and the Bank of England, will make his official announcement at 3:00 p.m. ET.
George Chahal, MP for Calgary Skyview, Alberta, who supports Carney, will be in attendance. Chahal said in a statement:
"In an era full of global challenges and a time of abundant economic opportunities, Mark Carney has the experience and leadership skills to meet these challenges and take advantage of these opportunities."
Mark Carney grew up in Edmonton, where his father Bob Carney ran for the Liberal Party in Edmonton-South in 1980, finishing second to Douglas Roche of the Progressive Conservative Party.
After months of declining popularity in opinion polls and political pressure from within the party, Justin Trudeau announced on January 6 that he would step down as leader of the Liberal Party and as prime minister once a replacement was found.
Carney calls himself an "outsider," despite his ties to Trudeau
Mark Carney called himself an "outsider" in an interview on "The Daily Show" that unofficially kicked off his campaign, despite ties to the Trudeau government.
In 2020, Trudeau appointed Carney as an "informal adviser" on the post-pandemic economic recovery plan. Also, last summer, Trudeau announced he had spoken with Carney about entering federal politics. Later in September, Carney was appointed as the Liberal Party's special economic adviser.
Last month, Liberal sources told CTV News that Trudeau was looking to replace former Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland with Carney. The decision to drop Freeland led to his sudden resignation on December 16, just hours before the autumn economic statement, and Trudeau's own resignation.
Conservative reaction
In a speech, the leader of the Conservative Party, Pierre Polivre, associated Mark Carney with the Trudeau government and said:
"Have you ever wondered why in Canada we no longer have access to things like affordable health care, food or housing? Things that used to be obvious? These are the result of 9 years of Trudeau, Freeland and Carney government.
Conservative Deputy Leader Melissa Lentzman also described Carney as "far from an outsider".
Other candidates
So far, Liberal MPs Chandra Arya and Jamie Battis and former Liberal MP Frank Bayliss have also announced their intention to run.
Chrystia Freeland has also said that she will announce her engagement soon.
