CBSA says individual jumped off moving train trying to illegally enter Canada
The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) says a man jumped off a moving freight train in an attempt to illegally enter Canada.
In a statement released Wednesday, the agency said the incident occurred in the Niagara Region. The man attempted to flee in Fort Erie, Ontario, but was apprehended by CBSA officers and Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP).
After an investigation, the agency said the man was inadmissible to Canada due to his specific circumstances and was returned to the United States.
Officials have described the incident as a human trafficking attempt and said two other people were taken hostage for questioning.
The agency said the discovery of the illegal crossing was part of a “Prevent and Counter” project that began in December to monitor vulnerable areas along the international rail bridge that connects Canada to the United States.
This story is developing and more details will be released in the future.
