Alberta plans to use sovereignty law to fight Ottawa's energy plan

Daniel Smith, the Premier of Alberta, has announced his dissatisfaction with the federal government's strategy to achieve net-zero emissions and intends to utilize the Sovereignty Act to counter it.
Smith stated, "We are currently preparing a Sovereignty Act proposal, but we hope not to have to use it. We are open to negotiations."
According to the Alberta government's website, the Sovereignty Act, which was passed last year, allows Alberta to independently challenge federal laws and protect its constitutional rights.
Smith emphasized that his government has already demonstrated its commitment by reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 44%, and other technologies, such as nuclear energy, should be researched before being introduced to Alberta.
The agency also reported that in 2022, 72% of Alberta's electricity was generated from natural gas, with an additional 12% coming from coal.
