According to a study conducted by the Namrind Housing Institute, 824 people are currently homeless in Regina. This statistic shows a 255% increase from 2015 (with 232 people). Also, compared to September 2021, when the number of homeless people was 488, there has been a significant increase.
The report shows that the biggest increases occurred between 2018 and 2021 (with a 71 percent increase) and then from 2021 to 2024 (with a 69 percent increase). Of all homeless people, 63% are completely unsheltered.
The study also indicates that despite constituting only 10% of the population of Regina, 75% of the homeless people identified in this study are from the indigenous community.
"75% of Regina's homeless population identify as Indigenous, while this community only makes up 10% of Regina's total population."
Many respondents to this research also struggle with challenges related to drug use (71%) and mental problems (54%).
Approximately 30% of these 824 people live with children, 37% of whom are under the age of five.
The Namrind Housing Institute stated in this study: "The increase in homelessness is alarmingly high, increasing by two-thirds in each of the last two counts."
