A gold pocket watch given to the captain who rescued Titanic survivors sells for record price

Daphne Simmons attends a meet-the-seniors event at the Avondale Railway Station Museum in Avondale, Newfoundland, on November 1. Sitting around an old wooden table drinking tea, she and three other women talk about the qualities they want in a partner: kindness, humor, a good sense of fun and a full hand of teeth.

Tired of dating apps and few places to meet men in person, these women attended this new event hoping to meet someone and make a real connection without using their phones.

"I'm retired, visiting my grandchild and visiting my single friends," said 65-year-old Daphne Simmons, who made the meeting place pleasant. At this age, I ask, "Well, where should I go?" She remembers meeting her late husband in a bar when she was young and described him as the best man she ever met.

Single men his age also get tired of trying to meet women, he says, and he sometimes jokes that he might have to go to other people's funerals to find love.

But the problems are more for people than young people. Jenny Paul, who runs the event, says she came up with the idea to help her 75-year-old mother. He has also come to the conclusion that dating apps are not effective for seniors.

"Sometimes I see children or grandchildren criticizing their elderly parents' dating or seeing it as pointless," says Jenny, who teaches yoga and movement for seniors in communities. "

He called his event "How Ya Gettin' It," a Newfoundland phrase for "How are you?"

On the other side of the country, in Victoria, dating coach Cherie McCormack has launched a matchmaking service for seniors. He believes that older people with their life experiences know exactly what they want and don't want from a life partner.

At the end of the event in Avondale, participants went to a local bar to hear a band break. Even though neither of them dated, friendships were still formed. "I know how lonely some of them were, but now maybe they have someone to call and talk to that they didn't have before," Jenny Temple said.
