A child's heart from Ontario was donated to a girl his age
Maryam De Groff and her husband often moved to different countries and always applied for organ donation wherever they lived, but they could never do it for their children.
Their nine-year-old daughter, Zaina, went into cardiac arrest last spring following an unexpected allergic reaction and died suddenly. He was taken to the Children's Hospital at the London Health Sciences Centre, where he was declared brain dead after a few days in the hospital.
When the girl's family was asked if they were thinking about organ donation, Maryam said that she had no doubts about it. Although the little girl had suffered a cardiac arrest, the doctors were able to revive her heart and then to Prepare donation. Seven organs were donated, including his kidney, liver, pancreas, both eyes and his heart. Initially, they were told that the heart would be transplanted into a 27-year-old, but they realized that the heart was not compatible with that patient. Finally, a 10-year-old girl was a candidate to receive Zaina's heart.
Zaine loved painting and in one of his paintings he drew a picture of a heart and wrote next to it: "I would like to be happy like a heart flying in the sky."
Maryam encourages everyone to register as an organ donor. Although the chance of becoming an organ donor is very small, it can potentially affect the lives of many people.
