Manitoba Second World War vet, 102, honored by Canadian Army Motorcycle Unit

The Canadian Army Motorcycle Corps gave a special honor to Manitoba World War II veteran Orville Marshall on Saturday. Marshall lives in Selkirk and turned 102 on November 20. Just five days after his birth, he was presented with an honorary membership of the unit, along with a member's vest.

Marshall was a private in the war and served a total of five years, spending time in Canada, Britain and Italy. He was the last Canadian to leave Italy after the end of the war.

“There were definitely times when a bullet landed near me or a bullet went past me. scared me Otherwise, there were lots of fun times as well as hard days. Along with charity events, members of the group travel together weekly, which club president Don Bertrand says is especially helpful for those who have experienced conflict.

"By helping ourselves to cure the wind by traveling on our motorcycles, because many of our members have post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and struggle with everyday life - riding a motorcycle is a way to reduce stress," he added.

Bertrand added that honorary memberships are not awarded in a lighter style. It was a big moment for Marshall's family, including his daughter, Darlene Vokey. "I can't even begin to describe how proud I am of him and everything he's accomplished in his life. And being a World War II person — I didn't understand a lot of that when I was younger, but I sure do now," he said.
