80% of Unifor members vote in favour of new contract at GM

The largest private sector union in Canada says that workers at General Motors have a new three-year collective agreement, with 80.5% of them approving it through online and in-person voting. Unifor says the terms of the deal are in line with the one agreed upon last month at Ford Motor Company, where 54% of union members voted in favor. Most skilled trades workers in Ford's plants in Oakville, Ontario, and in Windsor, Ontario, had given an unspecified majority vote against the agreement.
General Motors agreed to follow the terms of the Ford contract about 12 hours after Unifor members struck at the General Motors assembly plant in Oshawa last week. The Ford agreement included an almost 20% hourly wage increase for production and a 25% increase for skilled trades, an accelerated wage progression schedule, improvements in retirement benefits, and two new paid time-off days.
