Canada at risk of losing 57,000 government jobs
According to a new report from the Centre for Policy Alternatives, the Canadian federal government could cut more than 57,000 jobs in the public service by 2028 as part of a cost-cutting plan.
Agencies such as the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA), Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) and the Department of Social Development (ESDC) will be hit hardest by the cuts. The CRA alone could see more than 14,000 jobs eliminated.
The cities of Ottawa and Gatineau alone are home to more than 45 per cent of these jobs.
Experts have warned that such a decision could lead to a significant decline in the quality of public services, such as tax filing, unemployment insurance, pensions and immigration, which are directly related to citizens’ daily lives.
