Soraya Martinez Ferrada Officially Begins Her Role as Montreal’s New Mayor

On Wednesday, November 12, 2025, Soraya Martinez Ferrada was officially sworn in during an inauguration ceremony. Today, Thursday, November 13, marks her first official day in office.

Martinez Ferrada, who came to Canada from Chile as a refugee at the age of 16, is now making history as Montreal’s second female mayor and the first with a diverse cultural background.

She won the election with the slogan “Change”, ending eight years of Projet Montréal leadership. The new mayor has pledged to focus on major issues such as:
