Who won at the box office this weekend? The Reynolds-Lively household
In the box office competition between Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively, both couples won.
Ryan Reynolds' superhero movie, "Deadpool and Logan," topped the chart for the third week in a row with $54.2 million in ticket sales. The film has also crossed the $1 billion mark worldwide.
Blake Lively surpassed expectations with his romantic drama "It's Over With You" with a staggering $50 million.
Together, the two films created a kind of family version of "Barbenheimer," in which a pair of very different films thrived on contrasting programming. Only this time, the opposite films were played by one of the most famous couples in Hollywood. Hitting one or two movies was not completely unprecedented. In 1990, "Die Hard 2" starring Bruce Willis topped the box office, while "Ghost" starring Demi Moore came second.
This weekend also saw a costly failure. "Borders," the $120 million video adaptation directed by Eli Roth, opened with a paltry $8.8 million for Lionsgate. This movie starring Cate Blanchett, Kevin Hart and Jack Black was filmed in 2021. After delays and remakes, it finally hit theaters and was practically stillborn. The film scored a mere 10% freshness on Rotten Tomatoes and looks set to compete for one of the worst films of the year.
Meanwhile, "Deadpool and Logan," which also stars Hugh Jackman, continued to beat box office records. The film, directed by Shawn Levy, is only the second R-rated film to reach $1 billion, behind 2019's "Joker." Through three weeks, the film is already one of Marvel's top-grossing films, trailing only Disney's other top-grossing "Inside and Out" ($1.6 billion worldwide) among 2024 films.
Lawley has a cameo in "Deadpool and Logan," but he also stars in and produces "It's Over With You." Adapted from Cullen Hoover's best-selling romance novel, Lovely plays Lily Bloom, a Boston florist torn between two men, one in her current life (Justin Baldoni, who also directed the film) and one who was her first love. (Brandon Skelnar), caught.
"It's Over With You" cost $25 million to produce, so it will be a significant profit for co-financiers Columbia Pictures and Wafer Studios. Like Sony's adaptation of another summer blockbuster, "Where the Crabs Sing," "It's Over With You" could do well during the usually slower August box office period. Audiences gave it an A- CinemaScore.
Reynolds and Lovely sometimes highlighted the convergence of their films. Earlier this week, Reynolds posted a video of himself posing questions to Skelnar. The timing was especially beneficial for Lovely, as his film doubled its initial opening weekend projections.
Neon's "Coco," a German horror film from filmmaker Tillman Singer, opened with $3 million on 1,503 screens. This movie stars Hunter Shaffer and Dan Stones.
