Waterloo artist turns Ontario winter into art with backyard snow sculptures

An Ontario snow sculptor is turning the cold weather into an opportunity.

Matt Morris, a retiree from Waterloo, Ontario, has been wowing people with intricate snow sculptures in his yard for years. He started the winter tradition 14 years ago after being inspired by a sculpture from Easter Island, and it has since become a local favorite.

Morris gets his ideas from children walking to school or from social media, and his sculptures have included movie characters, athletes and local icons. His latest work is the “Old Man of Winter,” made with the help of his grandson Theodore.

He says the right snow for sculpting needs to be compact and malleable, and he hopes to keep creating for years to come. “I’m getting a little old, but if I can keep up the pace and still have fun, it’s a worthwhile goal.”
