Video shows tornado moving ashore in northern Ontario

A beautiful Labor Day weekend at the lake was marred by severe weather conditions that included a tornado in northern Ontario.

Video captured by Brent Shavorsky appears to show a water tornado forming over Marks Lake in northwestern Ontario on August 31st.

The 32-second video shows the tornado approaching the coast, overturning a boat lift and pier about 84 kilometers west of Thunder Bay.

The Northern Tornadoes Project, a group of researchers based at Western University, used satellite observations to investigate the event.

"The damage was assessed as an EF0 tornado with an estimated maximum wind speed of 90 kilometers per hour," the group said in a report.

"The available information is not enough to accurately estimate the length of the path, the maximum width of the path and the movement of the tornado. The analysis of satellite images did not show any visible damage.

No injuries were reported in this incident.

"The weird thing was that was the only damage," Shaworski said on social media after the tornado. The people at the bottom of the lake had no knowledge of it happening."

"If I hadn't seen it myself, I wouldn't have believed it."

Bryson Wark said on social media that he was on the other side of the lake when the incident happened.

"I could feel it, even though I couldn't see it, it was absolute madness," Wark said.

"The temperature outside went from 20 degrees Celsius to almost 0 degrees Celsius. And this went on regularly for about 5-10 minutes, and every time it got cold, it happened so fast that it took my breath away."

The Northern Tornado Project confirmed three tornadoes in the Northwest in June.

The first, an EF2, occurred on June 4 at approximately 6:35 PM in Lake Landings with an estimated maximum wind speed of 120 mph, a path length of 5.67 km, and a path width of 350 meters.

Two EF1 tornadoes were confirmed even farther north on June 24 between 7 and 7:30 p.m. at Brunette Lake and Apitu Lake.

The maximum wind speed was estimated at 145 km/h.

Five other incidents in the Northeast have also been recorded this year, including a July 30 funnel cloud over Lake Huron near Manitoulin Island and a June 13 downburst at Mowat Landing that is still under investigation.
