Trudeau considering his options as leader after Freeland quits cabinet, sources say
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is currently considering his options for leadership after Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland announced she is stepping down from cabinet. On Monday, Freeland published a letter of resignation, causing confusion and many rumors in the parliament. The resignation letter was published while Freeland was supposed to present the fall economic report on the same day; A report that usually includes important economic indicators such as the size of Canada's budget deficit.
Leaders of opposition parties, including the Conservative Party and the Bloc Quebecois, have called for an election, and the leader of the New Democratic Party has called on Trudeau to resign.
Following the resignation, Dominique Le Blanc, the current Minister of Public Security and Democratic Affairs, is set to be appointed as the new Finance Minister, sources said. A cabinet inauguration ceremony was also scheduled for the same afternoon.
In response to the resignation, New Democrat leader Jagmeet Singh has repeatedly called on Trudeau to resign, saying all options are open to opposition parties.
On the other hand, political analysts believe that Freeland's resignation may mean his desire to participate in leadership contests. However, this situation has caused an internal crisis in the Liberal Party and increased political pressure on the Prime Minister.
