New details on police-involved shooting at home in Innisfil, Ontario

Four South Simcoe police officers have been cleared of any wrongdoing in the fatal police shooting of an Innisfail home in August. This shooting caused the death of a young man and another facing serious charges.

Ontario's Special Investigations Unit (SIU) released a new report Monday, four months after the fatal shooting.

On August 15, officers were called to a dispute at a home on Shoreview Street in Innisfil. A person had called 911 to report that two men had attacked an unknown person, hit him with a club and a plastic hockey stick, and chased him down the street. Court documents show that the attack was carried out by two brothers on their father.

The two men then returned home and when officers arrived, both 19-year-olds were in an SUV.

The Special Investigations Unit alleges that the two men sped toward one of the officers, forcing the officer to fire into the vehicle.

The agency reports that officers repeatedly asked the two men to stop the vehicle, but they did not pay attention.

The driver was killed by a bullet and died in the car. Also, the vehicle's occupant is said to have attempted to get into the driver's seat and flee when the officers again fired their weapons.

The passenger of the car was shot several times and was taken to the hospital.

The director of the Special Investigations Unit concluded that the officers' actions were justified and likely prevented the men from fleeing and reduced potential risks to public safety.

While the names of the people were not mentioned in the report, according to CTV News, these two men were twins named Dylan and Liam Hutton, who lived in the house located on Shoreview Street.

Ontario Provincial Police wanted Dylan Hutton earlier this month on charges related to assault, assault with a weapon, assaulting an officer with a weapon and dangerous driving.

His defense attorney, Asha James, told CTV News that Hutton's family is "devastated" by the Special Investigations Unit's decision.

"If they had known where that day was going, they would never have called the police for help," he said.

Houghton has been released since his arrest and has a court date set for January in Bradford.

His lawyer added: "The family is focused on Dylan's criminal trial and they want him to get through it. They are still seeking accountability for what happened that day and want clarity. They want the truth about that afternoon to come out."

South Simcoe police declined to comment on the Special Investigations Unit's findings.

The charges brought against Hatton have not yet been examined in court.

The Special Investigations Unit is an independent government agency that investigates incidents involving death, serious injury, sexual assault or the use of firearms by the police.
