Toronto flight announces emergency code word "MED" after cockpit fire

A flight from Toronto's Pearson Airport to New York was forced to make an emergency landing shortly after takeoff following reports from the crew of sparks in the cockpit and a fire. Delta Air Lines Flight DL4826 took off from Toronto's Pearson Airport at 6:47 a.m. on February 3 with 74 passengers aboard, Aviation Herald reports.

The flight was reportedly approximately 11,000 feet above the Toronto runway when the crew put on their oxygen masks, issued the emergency code word Mayday and reported sparks in the cockpit; MED is an emergency code word that is used as an emergency signal in the speech rules of radio communication all over the world. This message is broadcast when the pilot of the aircraft believes that a danger (such as fire, explosion, or sinking) threatens the aircraft or its crew. According to Herald Aviation, the plane returned to Toronto at an altitude of 11,000 feet and landed safely on the Toronto runway about 25 minutes after the initial takeoff.
