"The upcoming elections will be held for climate change"
The next election will be a climate change election, according to Pierre Poilievre, who was pressured by reporters on Tuesday to explain what a Conservative government would do to reduce Canada's greenhouse gas emissions and combat climate change.
He said, "Our election platform will address all of these issues. The point is that Poilievre is eager for an election right now. The Conservative leader has asked the Prime Minister to treat Monday's vote on the Conservative proposal as a matter of confidence. And he is now declaring that the next election will be a 'carbon tax election.' In fact, we've had a few of those before. In fact, every federal campaign since 2008 has featured carbon pricing proposals from various parties - including the Conservative Party in both 2008 and 2021. In the past two elections, the party that won the most seats - the Liberals - was the one that actually implemented a national carbon tax.
Whether the Liberal carbon tax - and the latest hysteria about it - will be a defining issue in the next election, whenever it happens, is anyone's guess. But it is more accurate to say that the next election will be a climate change election.
