Suspect in Gilgo Beach serial killings is charged in the death of a seventh woman
The suspect in the Gilgo Beach serial murders in New York was also charged with the murder of another woman
Rex Heuerman, the New York architect accused of the Gilgo Beach serial killings, was charged Tuesday with Valerie Mack's murder. Mack's remains, first found on Long Island in 2000, were identified in 2020 after genetic testing. Mack, 24, was working as an escort in Philadelphia at the time and was last seen by his family in New Jersey later that year.
Heuerman, 61, who is also accused of murdering six other women, has denied all charges. Authorities said the investigation indicated Heuerman may have used his home to commit the murders when his family was away.
The case began in 2010, when police found numerous human remains on Gilgo Beach while searching for a missing woman. The investigation used DNA analysis and other evidence to identify the victims. Most of these victims were probably sex workers.
Authorities are also investigating the death of Karen Vergata, whose remains were found in 1996.
