Saskatoon police say violent crime is up 10 per cent since last year
According to new data from the Saskatoon Police Service, violent crime in Saskatoon increased by almost 10 per cent in the first quarter of 2024.
Police Chief Dave Hay on Thursday reported an increase in homicides between January 1 and March 31, with smaller but significant increases in other violent crimes such as stalking and threats compared to the first months of 2023.
Of Saskatoon's six homicides in the first quarter, Hay said factors included illegal drugs, home invasions, negligence and arguments. The fatal shooting on Mattson Drive involving two boys, ages 12 and 13, was listed as "unintentional" in his report.
These two youths are each facing charges of involuntary manslaughter in the murder of another 12-year-old boy who was shot and wounded in the early hours of February 19.
