'Risk of lead exposure': Kids clothes recalled, Health Canada says
Health Canada announced Tuesday that some clothing sold at Giant Tiger stores has been recalled due to high lead levels, CTVNews.ca national digital producer Charlie Buckley reports.
Affected products include two-piece sets of Real Love Girls shorts sold between May and October of this year with model number S37313/Giant Tiger (this number can be found on the garment's fabric label) and SKU number It is 1444637. Sizes 2 to 4T are included in this collection.
"Buttons on shorts contain more than the legal limit of lead, posing a risk of lead exposure to children," Health Canada said in a statement. According to the agency, as of October 14, 2024, the company has not received any reports of accidents or injuries in Canada.
Health Canada notes that lead exposure is associated with several negative effects, including seizures, vomiting, diarrhea, and anemia, as well as serious effects on the liver, kidneys, cardiovascular system, and immune system.
Lead can lead to complications in pregnancy and cause brain damage, and is especially toxic to children. According to health officials, there is no safe level of lead exposure.
The recall statement states that customers should stop using these products immediately and that refunds are available upon return to Giant Tiger stores. According to reports, 744 sets of shorts have been sold nationwide.
Consumers are reminded that the sale or even donation of recalled products is prohibited and that those in possession of these products must report any health and safety incidents to the ministry through an online form.
You can find more information in the collection notice, a link to which is available.
