Outdoor death toll similar to last year despite record cold in B.C.
The BC Coroners Service is investigating 36 outdoor deaths this year, two more than the same number last year.
It has been a week since the extreme cold weather in the province lasted for several days and has raised concerns about the safety of people who have nowhere to stay.
"These deaths are still under investigation, and as such, the cause of death has not yet been determined," said an update from the medical examiner's office covering data from Jan. 1 to Jan. 16.
Deaths classified as suicide, homicide, or motor vehicle deaths are excluded. "Outdoor deaths include deaths that occur in public open spaces, transit areas, parks, trails, campgrounds, wooded or grassy areas, or the open air.
