Ottawa city council to finalize $5.8B budget for 2024
Ottawa City Council will vote on the 2024 budget today.
The council meeting starts at 10 am. Councilors and the mayor will vote on the city's $5.8 billion spending plans for next year, which include a 2.5 per cent increase in property taxes, a 2.5 per cent increase in public transit fees and a 2.5 per cent increase in funding for the Ottawa Police Service.
If passed, townhome owners can expect their property finance bill to be $105 higher in 2024 than in 2023.
Transportation fares could become a point of contention at this meeting with Capital Coun. Shawn Menard proposed a fare freeze for 2024, which would be paid by adding 1 percent more to transportation.
Fares were already frozen in the 2023 budget, and the 2024 budget draft includes a freeze on EquiPas and local permits, but recommends the city raise regular fares and raise the cost of a monthly adult transit card to $128.75. give $3.25 more.
