Ontario to provide taxpayers with $200 rebate
Ontario Premier Doug Ford announced that the provincial government will send every Ontario taxpayer a $200 tax-free check. Ford added in his recent press conference that parents will also receive an additional $200 for each eligible child; Thus, a family with three children under the age of 18 may receive $1,000.
The Ontario government says the aid will cost $3 billion, and checks will go out early in the new year. Ford sees the move as a way to reduce pressure from high carbon tax costs and interest rates, adding that revenues from inflation and changes in the capital gains tax have helped fund the program.
The announcement came amid speculation that early elections could be held next year. On the other hand, Bonnie Crombie, the Liberal leader of Ontario, described this move as an "election trick" and said that the government should fulfill the promise of tax cuts instead of these one-time checks.
