Most Torontonians say city is not a good place to retire. Here's why

A majority of Torontonians believe the city is not a good place to retire, according to a new survey. The Liaison Strategies poll, released Monday, asked respondents whether they think Toronto is a good place to retire.

About 65 percent of respondents believed that the city is not suitable for retirees, while 32 percent agreed. Three percent of the respondents were hesitant.

According to experts, the cost of living, traffic, availability of daycare and security are likely to have influenced these figures.

About 57% of respondents said Toronto was a good place to raise children, while 52% said the city was a good place to own a dog.

In terms of transportation, more than half of respondents said Toronto is not a good place to drive. On the other hand, 44 percent said that the city is not a good place for cycling.

The poll shows that support for Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow has dropped slightly over the past month. About 53% of Torontonians approve of Mayor Chow's performance, which is a two percentage point decrease compared to the previous month.

Chow's approval rating appears to have taken a significant hit after the release of the city's 2024 budget in February, dropping from 70 percent approval to 55 percent.

The majority of the mayor's supporters can be found in downtown Toronto, where 66 percent of respondents said they approve of Chow's performance.

The poll shows Chave's approval rating in North York at about 50 percent, in Scarborough at 46 percent and in Etobicoke at 39 percent.
