Man and woman charged with manslaughter in death of infant in northern Ont.
On May 8, the Wikokamekong Tribal Police Service began an investigation when an infant was taken to the hospital. The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) was called to assist in the case on May 15. "Assistance was provided under the supervision of the OPP's Criminal Investigation Branch with support from the OPP's Manitoulin Separate Unit," police said in a news release Tuesday. He died on May 16. "Two people from Wikokamekong - a 33-year-old woman and a 34-year-old man - were arrested in connection with this case. Both of them have been charged with involuntary manslaughter, criminal negligence leading to death and failure to provide the necessities of life. are
One of the defendants has been released from custody and is scheduled to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in Wacocomicong on September 3. The other defendant is still in custody and is scheduled to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in Wacocomicong for a bail hearing on August 27. Ontario Provincial Police have not released other details of the case, saying a publication ban has been issued preventing them from releasing more information.
