Ingonish fishermen concerned about the impact of sewage discharge on livelihoods and crab fishing

Fishermen say a pipeline that will carry treated wastewater into Ingonish Harbour in Nova Scotia could have a major impact on their businesses.

But Victoria County officials say the sewer system is essential for commercial and residential development, and government agencies have said the project complies with federal and provincial regulations.

Matthew Smith, whose family has fished in Ingonish Ferry for generations, says the problem is that the harbour is not being properly cleaned and the water is not flowing.

“Our water is not moving, this harbour is not moving water, it’s just spinning,” he said. “It’s like a bathtub, to put it simply.”

Smith used his fishing boat’s sonar to create a 3D map of the harbour.

This map shows that the depth of the port basin is more than 20 meters, but its connection with the Atlantic Ocean waters is only established at a depth of four meters.
