Health Canada has recalled several brands of folic acid tablets
Health Canada has recalled six brands of 1-milligram folic acid tablets because they contain doses higher than the limit allowed during pregnancy.
The brands targeted in this recall are Compliments, Equate, Health One, Nature's Bounty, Pharmasave and Sisu. These supplements are sold by Vita Health Products in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
According to Public Health Canada, all pregnant women should take a multivitamin with 0.4 mg of folic acid every day.
The organization notes that you should not take more than 1 mg of folic acid per day without a doctor's advice. Too much folic acid can mask a B12 deficiency.
According to this organization, folic acid is vital for the normal development of the baby's spine, brain and skull.
Daily consumption of this vitamin during pregnancy, especially in the first months, can reduce the risk of a baby being born with a neural tube defect; This defect can lead to stillbirth or disability.
Although folate can be found in foods like corn and dark green vegetables, most women can't get enough of the vitamin from their diet.
