English language schools in Montreal in this heat wave It does not have air conditioning
The English-language school board in Montreal has requested that the provincial government provide funding for air conditioning units in schools, as a significant part of southern Quebec is facing a heatwave. Nearly 60 English-language schools have not been equipped with air conditioning, and teachers are moving students to cooler areas if the classrooms become too hot to ensure the students' well-being.
On Tuesday, Environment Canada announced that a hot and humid air mass is affecting a large part of the province, and temperatures in areas such as Abitibi-Témiscamingue, Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean, Eastern Townships, and the Greater Montreal area are expected to exceed 30 degrees Celsius.
On Wednesday and Thursday, humidity levels will range from 37 to 42 degrees Celsius, and the hot weather may continue throughout the week. The English-language school board says that receiving funds from the government could help the success of students during the heatwave, as students' performance tends to suffer when the classroom environment is too hot.
Heatwaves pose a risk of heatstroke. A spokesperson for Montreal ambulance services advises people to stay out of the sun if they have a headache, nausea, or feel tired, drink plenty of water, moderate alcohol consumption as it can lead to dehydration, and call 911 if experiencing heatstroke.
