Doctors, nurses and medical groups urge the province to walk back plans to limit gender-affirming care
The medical community in the community has addressed its concerns about restrictive policies that limit gender sensitivity for trans people. Several doctors, nurses and medical groups have published open letters urging the provincial authorities to lift these restrictions.
The letter states that new restrictions on doctors to provide appropriate health care for trans patients and that trans people can make independent decisions about their health will be negatively affected. There are also concerns about an increased risk of anxiety, worry and even suicide among transgender people due to limited access to the care they need.
These groups have suggested that the lists of recommendations from professional medical societies such as the Canadian Medical Association and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada conflict. These associations are based on respecting the rights and autonomy of transgender people and providing quality health care and services to all patients, including transgender people.
The open letter concludes by asking provincial officials to comment on their policies and follow the recommendations of professional medical associations. These groups believe that access to gender-critical care is essential to the health and well-being of transgender people and should not be restricted.
