'Caught me by surprise': Rare 'blue' frog spotted in Nova Scotia

In August 2024, a water frog was spotted in Candumber County, Nova Scotia. When a Nova Scotia woman went out for a walk, she discovered something very colorful. Jacqueline Belleau was picking mushrooms in the River Phillip area of Candombre County when she noticed something unusual on the ground.

"I just happened to see what I thought was a small piece of blue plastic, and when I got closer, it was shaped like a frog and it was blue," Bellew said.

"It really surprised me, and I approached it and it happened to be a water frog."

Bellew said he pulled out his phone and started taking pictures.

"Anne was just laying there on the floor, and after a few poses, she probably said, 'I'm tired of this shoot, and I'm getting out of here.' So, he made a few jumps and went into a small hole in the ground. It was really interesting to see", he said.

When he got home, Bellevue said, he told his biologist wife, who was just as surprised.

"I had never seen anything like this before, and I didn't know how rare it was," he said.

After research, he said, he believes the frog is a Batrachian, a type of green frog. However, he said this particular frog's yellow pigment appears to be missing, making it appear blue instead of green.

“It's really interesting. "I guess I didn't realize how rare it was, so I just appreciate the moment, and being with this little creature that was a different color," Bellew said.

"It's something you can find in nature when you're outside."
