Peel police say they have arrested a man who threatened to kill Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown last month.
In a news release, police said Kanwarjot Singh Manoria, 29, was arrested Tuesday and charged with “threats to commit murder or bodily harm.”
A source familiar with the investigation told CP24 that the threat was sent to the mayor’s office via email about two to three weeks ago and also mentioned his wife and son.
A special security team was deployed to Brown’s home and family for two weeks after receiving the threat, the source said.
Manoria was arrested after search warrants were executed and electronic devices were seized, police said.
“At this time, investigators believe this individual acted alone and is no longer a threat to the mayor, his family or the community,” police said Wednesday.
Manoria will remain in custody pending a bail hearing.
Brown told reporters at a separate news conference Tuesday that he did not want to interfere with the investigation but had “complete confidence” in Peel police.
“I feel safe because the Peel police force is very strong. This is not the first time I have received a death threat. I received one a few years ago. I am sure it will not be the last and it will never change the way I work,” he said.
Police did not comment on a possible motive for the threat, but the source confirmed that the threat had nothing to do with Brown’s public support for the Tamil community.
