Airbnb has banned the use of internal security cameras in rental properties
On Monday, Airbnb announced a policy change banning landlords worldwide from using security cameras in rental properties. The law, which will be passed on April 30, is a move by the San Francisco-based online rental platform to "simplify" its policies on the use of security cameras.
Before the change, Airbnb allowed cameras in common areas of the property, such as hallways, living rooms and dining rooms, as long as renters were aware of the camera's presence and were "clearly visible." However, the use of cameras in the bedroom and bathroom was prohibited. The company said the decision was made to respect customer privacy.
Airbnb has also introduced stricter rules for the use of outdoor cameras and noise decibel monitors. So that renters should be informed about the existence of these devices before booking. The cameras should also be removed from open spaces "where customer privacy must be maintained," such as saunas and bathrooms.
It is possible to use devices such as doorbell cameras so that owners can monitor the security of their home and prevent issues such as unauthorized parties.
Last year, a Vancouver resident said he discovered a hidden camera in a bathroom electrical outlet while renting a property on the Sunshine Coast.
