31 arrested, 100-plus charges laid in Peel street racing incidents dating back to last year
According to Peel police, 31 arrests and more than 100 charges have been made as a result of street racing incidents late last year.
On Nov. 18, 2023, about 150 cars were seen in several Peel County street racing incidents, investigators say.
The Safe Roads Team (SRT) was able to identify a number of drivers wanted for various dangerous driving offences.
The next day, many of the same street racers showed up to launch the race at Mississauga's American Drive. At least one accident involving a Corvette and a BMW occurred in this race.
The driver of the Corvette, a 21-year-old from Markham, and the driver of the BMW, 19, from Toronto, were both arrested and charged with multiple driving offences, including racing a motor vehicle and dangerous driving.
After the crash, the rest of the racers fled the area before heading to Highway 427 and West Finch Street, investigators said. They parked along the highway lanes and created traffic for over 25 minutes while the rest of the racers raced along the highway.
The investigation resulted in 31 arrests, 53 criminal charges and 69 highway traffic law charges.
Dangerous driving, such as those that occurred on November 18 and 19, 2023, will be seriously investigated and appropriate charges will be laid, police said. If possible, we will impound the person's car.
