Forceps severely injure 1 in 4 Canadian mothers when used in childbirth

According to a study published Thursday in the BMJ, mothers and fathers giving birth in Canada are seriously injured in one in four forceps deliveries.

Based on these studies over 10 years, they found evidence that forceps and vacuum delivery in Canada are associated with high rates of maternal and infant injury. In fact, among high-income countries, Canada has the highest rate of maternal injuries after birth with tools like forceps and vacuum cleaners, according to a study released today.
Despite the risk of harm, little effort has been made to highlight or address the problem in Canada.
