‘Out of control’ wildfire hits areas of Newfoundland
A large, out-of-control wildfire is burning in parts of Newfoundland, with RCMP and firefighters battling the blaze near Badger Lake.
A police public notice said drivers should expect possible road closures in the area and avoid the area.
According to the provincial government's website, wildfire season runs from April 24 to September 30 in Newfoundland and from May 15 to September 30 in Labrador.
In July 2024, Labrador experienced one of the largest evacuations in its history, when more than 7,000 residents of Labrador City were forced to leave their homes as the fire grew from 400 to 14,000 hectares.
